Research: The Stories Behind the Book

This project began as a master’s dissertation at the University of Wolverhampton — exploring a simple but overlooked question:
What happens to men when the women they love go through menopause?

Nine men took part in in-depth interviews, sharing what most men never say out loud. Their stories were raw, honest, and sometimes painful — describing loneliness, frustration, helplessness, and moments of breakthrough.
Their courage shaped the foundation of Authentic Men: A Guide to Menopause.

The research revealed that while men genuinely want to support their partners, most feel unprepared, isolated, and unsure how to respond. Many find themselves caught between empathy and exhaustion, love and frustration, wanting to help but not knowing how.

This page shares the academic roots of that work, alongside key insights and anonymised excerpts from the original study.
You’ll find:

  • A downloadable copy of the full MSc Psychology dissertation

  • Summaries of core findings and interview themes

  • Selected quotes from the men who took part

  • References and frameworks that informed the Authentic Men approach (ACT, IFS, Positive Psychology, and lived experience)

This isn’t research for research’s sake — it’s real men’s lived experience turned into practical understanding.
It’s for men who want to make sense of what’s happening, for women who want to understand their partners, and for professionals who believe relationships deserve both compassion and science.
